New report claims the iPhone 16 might be a total dud – but should we trust it?

Although the iPhone 15 may be among the best smartphones available, a recent report suggests that the iPhone 16 will not even come close to matching it. If the report is accurate, the iPhone 16 might even be best avoided as an upgrade.

New iPhone 16

At least, that’s what the Barclays analysts say (via 9to5Mac). According to the group’s most recent research note, there will be “weakness on iPhone volumes and mix, as well as a lack of bounce-back in Macs, iPads, and wearables,” making the outlook for Apple in the upcoming year dire.

I think the worst criticism is saved for the iPhone 16. According to Barclays, “we see no features or upgrades that are likely to make the iPhone 16 more compelling,” implying that the upcoming iPhone may be a complete bust—at least according to analysts.
The Vision Pro is completely left out of the report, possibly because of the low sales expectations for the device, and it is also quite pessimistic about Mac sales volume and Apple services performance for the upcoming year. Overall, it’s not exactly giving a positive picture of Apple’s future.

A gloomy outlook

It’s interesting to note that the rumour that the iPhone 16 won’t have any “compelling” features doesn’t fully align with what we’ve seen in other rumors. Do the analysts at Barclays possess knowledge that the public does not, or is the report erroneous?

Somewhere else, rumors have indicated that the iPhone 16 series will have haptic buttons, a new ‘Capture’ control, a better camera setup, new sizes, and a significant chip upgrade. According to one leak, Apple plans to use graphene technology to keep its phones cool. Therefore, even though some of those rumors may not be accurate, many of them still have a chance to be included in Apple’s upcoming phone lineup.

Nevertheless, when it comes to Apple, it’s usually advisable to err on the side of caution. The company often causes delays and unfounded rumors because it takes a patient approach rather than pushing features out the door. In light of this, the cautious outlook presented in the Barclays report may prove to be accurate.

Alternatively, it might be unduly pessimistic; there’s no way to know for sure at this point. We won’t know for sure until the iPhone 16 launches, most likely in September, despite the hopes of Apple enthusiasts that there will be plenty to be excited about.
